Thomas Walsh
Robert J. Waller Sr. and Robert J. Waller Jr. Professor of Music
We have one of the first and foremost jazz studies programs in the world—and all of our students benefit from the wildly creative and collaborative atmosphere we cultivate.
We offer undergraduate and graduate degrees that ensure you are trained in virtually every aspect of jazz performance and pedagogy, including improvisation, history, arranging/composition, small and large ensemble playing, rhythm section techniques, private instrumental study, studio techniques, vocal jazz, and pedagogy.
You’ll study with faculty members who possess impressive performance and educational credentials. Our world-class jazz studies faculty boasts scholars, authors, award-winning composers and performers, Grammy winners, National Endowment for the Arts recipients, Pulitzer Prize winners, and Jazz Masters.
Each week, you’ll have a private lesson with your faculty mentor. And you’ll get the benefit of our other faculty members’ varied expertise through classes and ensemble work.

As a jazz studies student, you’re required to perform as part of an ensemble.
You’ll have plenty of choices—we are home to three jazz big bands, the Latin Jazz Ensemble, and several combos.
As an added bonus, you’re encouraged to put on ad hoc performances with your peers.
Jacobs has provided me with the mentors and lifelong friends that have taught me what it means to really know and love music.
