Community Connections
At the Office of Wellness and Arts Health Initiatives (OWAHI), we harness the transformative power of music and arts to create meaningful connections beyond our campus. Our community outreach programs exemplify the Jacobs School of Music's commitment to enriching lives through the power of music and the arts.
Senior Outreach Program: Bridging Generations Though Music
Our Senior Outreach Program connects Jacobs School of Music students with local elderly communities. This intergenerational initiative sends Jacobs musicians to perform at nursing homes and senior living facilities, fostering meaningful exchanges across age groups. Students receive specialized training to create engaging performances for older adults, while gaining valuable experience and insights. The program enhances well-being for both generations, building bridges through shared musical experiences and creating moments of joy and connection.
Music and Healing Concert Series
In partnership with IU Health Bloomington Hospital, OWAHI presents the Music and Healing Concert Series. This initiative brings live music into the hospital environment, creating an uplifting atmosphere for patients, visitors, and staff. Musicians from the Jacobs School of Music perform in the hospital lobby near the food court, offering a respite from the clinical setting. These concerts aim to reduce stress and provide emotional support, showcasing the therapeutic benefits of music in healthcare settings.
To learn more about these programs or to participate, please contact us at jsomwell@indiana.edu. Join us in spreading the healing power of music throughout our community!
On the OWAHI Horizon
OWAHI is committed to growing our impact. We are actively expanding our services and forging new partnerships to enhance the well-being of both our campus community and the broader Bloomington area.
Flourishing Initiative
Soon, incoming Jacobs students will have the opportunity to participate in online wellbeing programs before arriving on campus. OWAHI wants to help equip our students with skills to thrive at Jacobs by the time they are ready to join our community. This program will launch in summer of 2024 or 2025.
