Scholarship for Students from ASEAN Countries
While leading a delegation from the Jacobs School of Music to Thailand in August 2023, Dean Abra Bush announced a new initiative, the Dr. Saisuree Scholarship, for incoming students from countries that are part of ASEAN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam).
The scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Saisuree Chutikul, who attended the Jacobs School of Music and the School of Education at the IU Bloomington campus in the 1950s. She has since served in critical roles in the Thai government where she in her role as cabinet minister and senator has spent a lifetime advocating for the rights of women and children in Thailand and around the world. Also an advocate and a leader of the arts, Dr. Saisuree has herself actively performed as a concert pianist and was a founding member of the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra.
The Dr. Saisuree Scholarship is available to both undergraduate and graduate students from ASEAN countries who are admitted to one of the programs in the Jacobs School of Music. No separate application is required, provided the application confirms citizenship or graduation from a college or university in an ASEAN country. The scholarship covers 50% of the cost of tuition and fees and can be combined with other merit-based scholarships at the Jacobs School of Music.
