To the Jacobs School of Music Community:
It has come to my attention that allegations were made yesterday against Professor Demondrae Thurman on social media. In accordance with policy, the university has addressed these concerns immediately. Currently, Dr. Thurman is not serving as executive associate dean, chair of brass, or in any instructional position.
As a reminder, Indiana University takes seriously and investigates all reports of sexual misconduct. In addition, the Jacobs School of Music is committed to maintaining an environment for all persons that is free from sexual misconduct, harassment, discrimination, microaggressions, bullying, and implicit biases. Anyone who feels that they have experienced any of these are encouraged to report the behavior to the Indiana University Office of Institutional Equity by email (oie@iu.edu) or leave a voice mail at 812-855-7559.
If you have been the victim of sexual violence or know someone who has, please know that there are many resources available to support and help you.
Confidential Victim Advocates are available to listen and offer support when you need it and will keep your conversation and personal information private. These are the only IU employees who are NOT mandatory reporters. They are tasked with providing help in difficult situations, including where you may have uncertainty about how to proceed.
The Sexual Assault Crisis Service team is a service of CAPS, and is available to students 24 hours a day at (812) 855-8900. Free services are available that include crisis consultation, individual and group counseling, and assistance with referrals for medical care.
Information about how to report an incident of sexual violence can be found at https://stopsexualviolence.iu.edu/.
In addition, the university offers resources for students including TimelyCare, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), and the Student Advocates’ Office. Faculty may seek support from SupportLinc Employee Assistance Program.
Please contact me directly with any questions you may have.
Sincerely,
Abra Bush
