Apply to join the next class of undergraduate students

Step 1: Apply to IU
Apply to Indiana University no later than December 1. The application fee is $65.
You can choose from three application platforms -- Apply IU, Common Application, or Coalition Application.
Send supporting materials to IU
To complete your IU application, you must submit the following materials to the Indiana University Office of Admissions:
- Official transcripts
- SAT or ACT scores, if applicable. IU is test-optional. Visit our test-optional admissions policy page to learn more.
Transfer students must also send their transcripts of all completed college coursework to musicadm@indiana.edu by December 1, 2020.
If you are currently enrolled at IU, your process is different! To apply, please contact the Jacobs School of Music Office of Admissions at musicadm@indiana.edu to request an internal application. You are not required to resend supporting materials to IU.
Step 2: Apply to the Jacobs School of Music
After you apply to IU, you must also apply to the Jacobs School of Music.
The deadline to complete the Jacobs School Supplemental Application is December 1. The application fee is $95.
Letter(s) of recommendation and prescreen (if applicable) must be submitted during this phase. Your recommenders will receive a secure link to use to upload their letters after you submit your application.
Step 3: Complete your audition and/or interview
Complete an audition and/or interview, as applicable to your program. Visit your department's audition page for information on this year's updated audition process.

Special note for international students
After you apply to IU, you must submit supporting documentation to the Office of International Services, including official transcripts and SAT, ACT, and TOEFL scores, if applicable.
Note: IU is test-optional for SAT and ACT scores. Visit our test-optional admission policy page for more information.
The deadline to submit your supporting documentation is November 1.
Additional documentation for transfer students
As a transfer student, you must request transfer release from your current school. Download the Jacobs School of Music Transfer Release Form and have the appropriate official at your current institution complete it and give it back to you. Email the form directly to the Jacobs School of Music Office of Admissions. Please note that no offer of merit-based financial aid will be made unless this completed form is on file.
Additional application information
Undergraduate international applicants
If your native language is not English, please visit IU's admissions standards page for the requirements on how to meet demonstration of english proficiency.
Graduate applicants
If your native language is not English, you must submit a TOEFL score, demonstrating your level of English proficiency.
Minimum scores
- Master of Music applicants: 84 (internet), 223 (computer), 560 (paper)
- Performer Diploma and Artist Diploma applicants: 65 (internet), 183 (computer), 510 (paper)
- Doctor of Music applicants: 100 (internet), 250 (computer), 600 (paper)
Applicants in Voice (all), Piano (D.M. only), Conducting, Musicology, and Graduate Music Education must submit scores by December 1, 2020. All other applicants must submit scores by March 1, 2021. There are no exceptions to these requirements and scores must be submitted in order for an admission decision to be made.
You should expect an admissions decision from us no later than April 1, 2021. The enrollment response date for graduate students is April 15, 2021 and for undergraduate students is May 1, 2021.
The Jacobs School Supplemental application gives you the opportunity to express your preference for individual faculty members.
Studio Placement is based on space availability in faculty studios and student requests. Upon admission, please reach out directly to your preferred teacher to confirm your studio. All incoming students are guaranteed placement with a faculty member by orientation week.
Spring admission (students beginning in January) is limited and is dependent upon space availability in individual departments.
For optimal merit-based financial aid consideration, fall admission is encouraged.
