FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 13, 2016

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Philharmonic Orchestra and Oratorio Chorus will perform Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at 8 p.m. April 20 in Bloomington’s Musical Arts Center.

The iconic work will be presented in honor of the “Five Friends”–the five Jacobs School of Music students who were killed in a plane crash on April 20, 2006.

Proceeds from the concert will support the school’s Five Friends Master Class Series, made possible by a gift from the Georgina Joshi Foundation Inc.

Chris Carducci was a master’s student studying with Timothy Noble and had recently appeared at Carnegie Hall, where he presented selections from Wolf's “Italienisches Liederbuch” for the Marilyn Horne Foundation's “The Song Continues” 2005.

Garth Eppley, a tenor from Wabash, Ind., was a master's student studying with Timothy Noble. He was a frequent soloist with the IU Contemporary Vocal Ensemble, having recently sung the role of Pilatus in Arvo Pärt's “Passio.”

A native of South Bend, Ind., Georgina Joshi had received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Royal College of Music, London. Notably, she had sung for the gala opera night at the Beaumaris Festival with the Welsh Chamber Orchestra conducted by Anthony Hose.

Zachary Novak was a native of Anderson, Ind., and graduated from Anderson University in 2004. He was a master's student in choral conducting and studied voice with Brian Horne.

Robert Samels was in the doctoral program and studied with Giorgio Tozzi and Costanza Cuccaro. He appeared as Dr. Gibbs in the world premiere of “Our Town” with IU Opera Theater and was a well-known personality on WFIU Public Radio.

Reserved seating tickets--$5-$10 Regular and free for students with ID (ticket required)—are available from the Musical Arts Center box office 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The concert will be video-streamed via IUMusic Live! and audio-streamed on WFIU Public Radio.
