He earned a Ph.D. in Music Theory from the Eastman School of Music in 2024, having previously earned an M.A. in Music Composition and B.A. in Music and Mathematics. Kahr’s research connects twentieth- and twenty-first century musics to developments in audio technologies and theories of hearing. His current research investigates how American experimental music, French spectral music, global sound art, and other electroacoustic repertoires renegotiate tonality’s relations to acoustics and perceptual science.
Kahrs’ work has appeared in journals including Music Theory Online, Tempo, and Mitteilungen der Paul Sacher Stiftung, and he has presented at conferences including those of the Society for Music Theory (SMT), American Musicological Society, and various regional and area-specific organizations. He currently serves as cochair for SMT’s Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group and a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Mathematics and Music.
