BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music is pleased to announce the appointments of three additional long-term faculty members to its Music in General Studies program. Jacobs alumni Daniel Bishop, Alissa Guntren and Gabriel Lubell have each been appointed lecturer in music in music in general studies, effective Aug. 1.
“We are very happy to be able to bolster the faculty roster for Music in General Studies,” said Abra Bush, David Henry Jacobs Bicentennial Dean. “Serving approximately 4,500 students each year, the program is a critical component of the Jacobs School and continues to enhance the education of not only our students but many throughout the university as well.”
Bishop is currently an adjunct lecturer with the program, where he has taught since 2010, and offers cinema studies courses. He has created and developed several new courses, including Music in Global Cinema, Music and Culture in the James Bond Franchise and Superheroes: Music in Cinema. His first book, “The Presence of the Past: Temporal Experience and the New Hollywood Soundtrack” (Oxford University Press, 2021), was a study of American cinema of the 1960s and 70s and the role of the soundtrack in creating sensibilities of temporal and historical experience.
A Jacobs faculty member since 2009, Guntren is currently a visiting lecturer coordinating music theory courses for Music in General Studies and teaching music fundamentals, aural skills and music history courses. She also designed and is the primary instructor for a comprehensive piano and aural skills course for musical theater majors. Her research interests focus on music and the somatic experience, creativity in music-making and music theory pedagogy. She has a particular affinity for nineteenth-century German Romantic repertoire. She is also an active chamber music performer and piano instructor and participates in several local nonprofits.
Currently a visiting lecturer with Music in General Studies, Lubell is also a composer, music theorist and astronomer. His teaching has been recognized with awards from across IU: the Carl H Ziegler Teaching Award (2013) from the Collins Living-Learning Center, Special Citation for Excellent Teaching (2012) from the Department of Music Theory and Frank and Margaret Edmondson Prize (2007) from the Department of Astronomy. His work on music theory course design received an honorable mention from the Society for Music Theory in 2022. As a theorist, he has conducted original research on how albums operate as complete artworks, focusing especially on our subjective roles as listeners. He has presented papers about albums by the Beatles, Pink Floyd and Sleater-Kinney in print and at international conferences.
“We are thrilled at the elevation of three current positions to full-time, long-term lecturer positions beginning this fall,” said Constance Cook, director of Music in General Studies. “Congratulations to Dan, Alissa and Gabe, each of whom brings a wealth of knowledge and teaching experience to the program. Their contributions substantially expand the breadth of our course offerings.”
