BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music is pleased to announce the appointment of Cecilia Kang as associate professor of music in clarinet, effective Aug. 1, pending approval of the IU Board of Trustees.
Kang is an internationally acclaimed clarinetist, educator and scholar who has earned prestigious prizes from the International Clarinet Association, New Music USA and Canada Council for the Arts, among others. She is currently associate professor of clarinet at Louisiana State University and has previously taught at Furman University and North Dakota State University.
A passionate advocate for neurodiversity in music education, Kang has presented over 100 master classes and lectures worldwide, including at the Milan Conservatory (Italy), Krzysztof Penderecki Academy (Poland) and Central Conservatory of Music (China). Her scholarly and educational contributions have been published in Nineteenth-Century Music Review, The Clarinet Journal and the ToneBase Online Platform.
“Cecilia Kang is not only an exceptionally gifted performer and teacher, she is also an ardent champion of inclusivity and community,” said Abra Bush, David Henry Jacobs Bicentennial Dean. “Her broad array of talents will indeed set a high bar for our students to aspire to.”
Throughout her career, Kang has initiated numerous innovative community-building projects. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she founded the Silver Linings Initiative, hosting 25 virtual panel discussions with leading clarinetists, educators and arts leaders. In 2023, she curated the groundbreaking Han and Heung Festival at Louisiana State University, celebrating the cultural resilience of the Korean and African American diasporas through music and dialogue.
Kang has served as an adjudicator for the National Endowment for the Arts, International Clarinet Association and Vandoren Emerging Artist Competition. She holds degrees from the University of Michigan (D.M.A.), University of Southern California (M.M.) and University of Toronto (B.M.). She is a Vandoren and Buffet Crampon Performing Artist Clinician.
