BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Historical Performance Institute is pleased to announce that online registration is open for its fourth annual international conference. “Historical Performance: Theory, Practice and Interdisciplinarity” will take place from May 17 through May 19 at the Jacobs School.

Thirty-four presentations will come from an international field of delegates, and two concerts will be offered. A lecture-concert focused on 16th-century improvisation techniques will be presented May 17 by virtuoso recorder player Sarig Sela (Hebrew University of Jerusalem). “Italian Grounds and Airs” will focus on repertory of the 17th century, performed by faculty of the early music program at the University of Southern California led by Adam Gilbert, on May 18.

The May 17 concert will open the 2019 Bloomington Early Music Festival, a collaboration between Bloomington Early Music, the Historical Performance Institute and Early Music America.

Thomas Forrest Kelly, Morton B. Knafel Research Professor of Music at Harvard University and an animateur in the field of early music, will deliver the keynote address, “Present Tense. Does the Past Have a Future?”

Plenary addresses will also be given by Brianna Robertson-Kirkland (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), Ross W. Duffin (Case Western Reserve), Adam Gilbert (University of Southern California), Jeffrey Kurtzman (Washington University in St. Louis) and Ayana Smith (IU Jacobs School of Music).

In addition to new research dealing with performance practice from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, there will be presentations and a panel discussion directed toward issues of diversity and inclusion in the field of historical performance, past and present.

“It’s wonderful to witness the substantial interest that this conference has attracted in recent years,” says Dana Marsh, convener/founder of the annual event and director of the Historical Performance Institute. “We have an especially strong showing this season, and a new, annual peer-reviewed journal has been born in the process of convening these yearly events. We’re in it for the long haul, so we’re already anticipating our fifth-anniversary meeting next year, which will coincide fortuitously with the 40th anniversary of the HPI and the bicentennial of Indiana University.”
