BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music will add a number of offerings to its Music Scoring for Visual Media program this fall. The robust Composition Department program will include a master’s degree as well as undergraduate and doctoral minors, and two certificate degrees.
Music Scoring for Visual Media revolves around composing-to-picture courses taught by program director Larry Groupé, visiting professor and highly successful industry composer, that focus on dramatic analysis of character and story arc, concentrating on carefully thought out musical decisions and implementations that best serve the narrative of the media.
Additional courses include Synthestration, an in-depth study in creating the highest-quality MIDI demos—a key competitive skill required to function at a professional level in any scoring endeavor—and modular courses in Orchestration for the Screen, Licensing, Contract Legal Practices and Performing Rights.
Already in place are various collaborations with the IU Media School, teaming composers with filmmakers and game designers. Indiana University Cinema sponsors some of these programs and awards commissions to students to compose scores for full-length films, with musicians from the Jacobs School of Music performing them live to picture.
Emmy-winner Groupé recently began his latest score for longtime director Rod Lurie, for the true-story war picture “The Outpost,” starring Orlando Bloom, Scott Eastwood and Caleb Landry Jones. Concurrently, Groupé is also composing a new commission for an 80-piece orchestra and 60-piece choir, to premiere this summer in Oregon.
The Jacobs School of Music Composition Department consistently ranks among the top departments of its kind in the world. The faculty is committed to providing the best environment, stimulation, training and opportunities for young composers, acting individually as teachers and mentors, and together as a department.
