BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – While it is not unusual for the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music to annually have several members of its faculty, student and alumni body nominated for or on a recording that is nominated for a Grammy Award, it is unusual for the list to include members from all three groups, as it does this year.
Leading the charge is faculty violinist, and virtuoso, Joshua Bell. He is up for Best Classical Instrumental Solo for “Bruch: Scottish Fantasy, Op. 46; Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 26” from “Bruch: Scottish Fantasy.” He is not only the soloist on the album but also directed the Academy of St Martin in the Fields chamber orchestra on the recording.
Faculty trumpeter John Raymond played, arranged and composed on Orrin Evans and the Captain Black Big Band’s “Presence” release, which is nominated for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album.
Horn students Nathan Goldin and Nicolas Perez performed on “Harbison, Ruggles & Stucky: Orchestral Works” by the National Orchestral Institute Philharmonic, which is vying for Best Orchestral Performance. Goldin studies with Rick Seraphinoff, while Perez is a student of Jeff Nelsen.

• Mike Valerio, bass, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media
• Daniel Zuluaga, lute, “ARC,” Best Classical Solo Vocal Album
The 61st annual Grammy Awards will be presented live by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences on Sunday, Feb. 10, in Los Angeles and broadcast on CBS.
