BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music is pleased to announce that collaborative pianist Anne Epperson will join its faculty as professor of music in collaborative piano, effective August 2017, pending approval of the Trustees of Indiana University.
Until her appointment commences, Epperson will begin to establish a teaching presence at the Jacobs School while she continues to serve in her current appointment at the University of Texas at Austin’s Butler School of Music.
“Anne Epperson is an artist unmatched in this country for her vision and energy in developing collaborative programs,” said Gwyn Richards, dean of the Jacobs School of Music. “This transformational appointment has garnered the support of our faculty and will have immeasurable impact on our school.”
Epperson said, “I’m honored to be invited to join the faculty of the prestigious Jacobs School of Music. I look forward to bringing my knowledge and experience to a school with so many wonderful resources.”
In 2008, Epperson inaugurated a new collaborative piano program at the UT Butler School of Music, where she serves as professor of collaborative piano, the Wayne L. Catching Professor of Piano Accompanying and Chamber Music, and director of collaborative services.
From 2004 to 2008, Epperson was professor of collaborative piano at the University of Colorado at Boulder’s College of Music, where she created and developed a new graduate degree program. She was professor of music and director of collaborative arts at the University of California–Santa Barbara from 2001 to 2004, and she was head of the Collaborative Piano Department—a department and degree program she created—at the Cleveland Institute of Music from 1985 to 2001. Her previous faculty positions include teaching appointments at the University of Illinois at Champaign–Urbana and at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
Epperson enjoys a distinguished career as a performer, recording artist, teacher and clinician. She made her debut at age 12 with the New Orleans Philharmonic under Alexander Hilsberg. After studies at Louisiana State University and The Juilliard School, she entered graduate school at the University of Southern California and was appointed staff pianist for the master classes of Jascha Heifetz. This auspicious beginning led to a successful career as a collaborative partner.
She has appeared in concert to critical acclaim with distinguished artists throughout the United States, Canada, South America, Mexico, Europe, Israel, Scandinavia and Taiwan. From 1980 to 1989, she toured the United States as pianist with the Canterbury Trio, under the auspices of Columbia Artists Management, Inc. She has recorded for Vanguard, Musical Heritage Society, Nonesuch, Centaur, Koch International and Claves, and has produced and edited recordings for Nonesuch and Azica.
She has been juror for many prestigious competitions, including Walter W. Naumburg Foundation competitions, Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, Coleman Chamber Music Competition, Plowman Chamber Music Competition, New Orleans International Piano Competition, Corpus Christi International Young Artists Competition and Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Awards. Epperson has been a panelist, lecturer, performer and master class presenter for the Music Teachers National Association, National Conference on Piano Pedagogy, Colorado Music Teachers Association, Oklahoma Music Teachers Association, Indiana Music Teachers Association, South Carolina Music Teachers Association and Vocal Arts Resource Network in Ohio. In the spring of 2005, she presented a week-long series of master classes in Seoul, South Korea.
Epperson was on the faculty of the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara from 1992 to 2006, teaching, performing and administering the collaborative piano program she designed. In the summer of 2013, she was invited as guest faculty to coordinate the collaborative piano program at the Aspen Music Festival and School, and she returned in that capacity for four weeks in the summer of 2015. She has been a guest performer and coach at the Sarasota Music Festival, International Festival–Institute at Round Top, Garth Newel Summer Festival, Taos Chamber Music Festival, Scotia Festival, Chamber Music Northwest, Meadowmount School of Music and Colorado College Summer Music Festival, among others.
