Henry A. Upper Chair of Orchestral Conducting
Henry Upper is the retired Associate Dean of External Relations in the School of Music. He joined the faculty of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 1971, and has served in the administration of the school in the capacity of Director of Undergraduate Studies and Associate Dean for Administration. In addition, he has held a professional appointment in the Piano Department where he was Chairman for a number of years.
Dean Upper has been involved in expanding international relations for the School of Music in London, Vienna, Madrid and Shanghai, China. He also works with alumni clubs and music alumni across the country. Further, he is involved with support groups such as the Society of the Friends of Music.
Dean Upper received his Bachelor and Master degrees from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He completed a Doctor of Music degree in piano performance at Indiana University. He has studied with Gyorgy Sandor, Joseph Battista and Walter Robert. He is an active collaborative pianist and chamber musician who has performed throughout the United States and in Mexico. He has served on the juries of international piano competitions in Rome and in Cologne, Germany.
The Henry A. Upper Chair of Orchestral Conducting supports the designated holder of the chair, research, manuscript preparation, graduate reserach assistance, library and equipment acquisitions, and other requirements of an active scholar and teacher. It is currently held by Professor Thomas Wilkins.
