Robert W. Miller, M.D. Vocal Scholarship
Born in Valparaiso, Indiana in 1943, Robert Wayne Miller, M.D., was valedictorian of his high school class, and received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Purdue in 1965. While studying at IU for his M.S. in Medicine/Pharmacology (1968) and M.D. (1970), Robert developed his classical music and opera "ear" due to the Jacobs School's policy of free tickets for students. So began a lifelong passion that involved travelling throughout the U.S. and Europe to attend productions and a CD library that numbered about 10,000 discs.
Robert's psychiatry internship and residency were at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and his military assignments were at Ireland Hospital, Ft. Knox, KY; Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C; and Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu, HI. Robert retired from the U.S. Army as a Colonel in September 1989, returned to the metropolitan Washington area, and began working for Fairfax County, Virginia, first as Staff Psychiatrist--Emergency Service, then as Consulting Psychiatrist within the Forensic Unit at the Adult Detention Center, and finally at the Woodburn Center for Community Mental Health from where he retired in 2007. Robert passed away on September 21, 2024, and his cremains were interred in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery on August 7, 2025.
This fund was established in 2025 to support scholarships for undergraduate and/or graduate students studying voice in the Jacobs School of Music.
