The Music Production program at the Jacobs School of Music will prepare you for a variety of technical and creative careers in the entertainment industry.

Our multidisciplinary approach is designed to provide you with the knowledge and experience to be successful in this dynamic and rapidly evolving field.

The process of creating an audio recording that is ready for public release requires knowledge, skills, and practice that are both technical and creative; it's a combination that can be embodied in a single person or across a group of people. Jacobs Music Production degree separates the required knowledge, skills, and practice into two tracks. The Audio Engineering track focuses mainly on the technical side while the Creation and Production track will focus mainly on the creative side. There is certainly a great deal of overlap, and we foresee many in the Audio Engineering track choosing the Music Production minor, which focuses on the creative side.

As a Music Production major, you will collaborate directly with the talented students and faculty of the Jacobs School.

You’ll get hundreds of hours of hands-on experience working in our state-of-the-art studios and world-class performance venues and will have extensive opportunities for audio engineering and production, music creation, and performance.

In addition to working on the numerous and varied performances of the school, our ongoing collaborations with IU colleagues such as the Media School and the Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance provide technical and creative opportunities in sound for visual media, game audio, theatrical sound design, and live sound.

And the breadth of IU’s academic and extra-curricular offerings allows you to pursue your interests outside of audio engineering.
