Application process for current Jacobs students
These procedures are for current undergraduate Jacobs students who wish to apply to a new undergraduate music degree program. For example:
- B.M. to B.M.E.
- B.M.E. to B.M.
- B.S.O.F. to B.M. or B.M.E.
Students who would like to add a new B.M., B.M.E., or B.S.O.F. degree to their current degree must also follow these procedures.
Current University Division students or applicants from other majors within Indiana University must follow procedures for IU transfer applicants.
All current Jacobs School of Music undergraduate students who wish to apply to a graduate degree must follow procedures for graduate applicants.
Step 1
Complete the Internal JSOM Supplemental Application by December 1. Select the application for your program that lists "Internal." For your letter of recommendation, list your major teacher or advisor's email.
Step 2
Complete an audition/interview for the new program. All auditions must be completed by March 1.

This process is for current graduate Jacobs students who wish to apply to a new graduate music degree program in performance, composition, or education. For example:
- M.M. to D.M. or A.D. or P.D.
- M.M.E. to D.M.E. or Ph.D.
- *P.D. to M.M. or D.M.
- *A.D. to M.M. or D.M.
*If you are a current diploma or certificate student applying for a degree program (M.M., D.M., D.M.E., Ph.D.), you must also submit an IU Graduate School application in addition to a Jacobs School Internal Supplemental application. The IU Graduate School application fee of $70 is waived for current graduate students.
Special procedures are in place for Ph.D. in Musicology, Ph.D. in Music Theory, and Artist Diploma applicants. Please review the sections below if you are interested in these programs.
Current undergraduate applicants who wish to apply for a graduate program must follow the process for external graduate applicants.
Step 1
Complete the Internal Jacobs Supplemental application by December 1. Select the application for your program that lists "Internal."
If applicable, submit your test scores to the Jacobs School Admissions Office via this application or by email at musicadm@iu.edu.
- TOEFL score (if your native language is not English)
- GRE score (optional). If you wish to submit optional GRE scores for the musicology, music theory, or music education program, the deadline to submit is December 1.
Step 2
Complete an audition/interview for the new program. All auditions must be completed by March 1.

These procedures are for students who are currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Musicology at the Jacobs School of Music who would like to apply for admission to the Ph.D. program.
Step 1
All applicants must first complete the Indiana University Application for Graduate and Professional Studies by December 1. An application fee will normally be assessed for the application; however, as you have paid the fee in the past, be sure to request a fee waiver as you reach the last step of the application.

Complete the Internal Jacobs School Supplemental application by December 1. Select the application for your program that lists "Internal."
In this application, you will submit letters of recommendation and prescreening materials. This includes a formal research paper or thesis on an analytical or historical subject.
To complete your prescreening portfolio, you must also upload the following to your Supplemental application or by email to musicadm@iu.edu:
- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
- TOEFL score (only if your native language is not English)
- M.A and Ph.D. applicants are not required to, but may submit optional GRE General Test scores. If you wish to submit GRE scores, the deadline to submit is December 1.
Step 3
If you pass the prescreening, you will be invited to attend an interview day.
These procedures are for students who are currently pursuing a Master of Music in Music Theory at the Jacobs School of Music who would like to apply for admission to the Ph.D. program.

Step 1

After enrolling, complete the Application for Certificate Completion, which is available at the Jacobs School of Music Office of Undergraduate Advising and Records (musug@indiana.edu). This is required to earn your certificate.

Undergraduate international applicants
If your native language is not English, please visit IU's admissions standards page for the requirements on how to meet demonstration of english proficiency.
Graduate applicants
If your native language is not English, you must submit a TOEFL score, demonstrating your level of English proficiency.
Minimum scores
- Master of Music applicants: 84 (internet), 223 (computer), 560 (paper)
- Performer Diploma and Artist Diploma applicants: 65 (internet), 183 (computer), 510 (paper)
- Doctor of Music applicants: 100 (internet), 250 (computer), 600 (paper)
Applicants in Voice (all), Piano (D.M. only), Conducting, Musicology, and Graduate Music Education must submit scores by December 1. All other applicants must submit scores by March 1. There are no exceptions to these requirements and scores must be submitted in order for an admission decision to be made.
You should expect an admissions decision from us no later than April 1. The enrollment response date for graduate students is April 15 and for undergraduate students is May 1.
The Jacobs School Supplemental application gives you the opportunity to express your preference for individual faculty members.
Studio Placement is based on space availability in faculty studios and student requests. Upon admission, please reach out directly to your preferred teacher to confirm your studio. All incoming students are guaranteed placement with a faculty member by orientation week.
Spring admission (students beginning in January) is limited and is dependent upon space availability in individual departments.
For optimal merit-based financial aid consideration, fall admission is encouraged.
