FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Provost Professor of Music Daniel Perantoni, from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, will receive the Edwin Franko Goldman Memorial Citation from the American Bandmasters Association at the IU Wind Ensemble concert at 8 p.m. on April 11 in Auer Hall.
In addition to honoring Goldman’s memory, the purpose of the award is to provide recognition to those outside the membership of the American Bandmasters Association who have rendered conspicuous service in the interest of bands and band music in America.
Perantoni, or Mr. P as his students call him, is a legendary tuba artist and pedagogue as well as a trailblazer in a variety of genres, including work as a solo recitalist, chamber musician, jazz musician and instrument designer. He is often cited as a “tubist’s tubist” with impeccable musical style and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from T.U.B.A. (now the International Tuba/Euphonium Association).
“The Goldman Citation is one of the most prestigious awards given to an individual outside of the American Bandmasters Association membership,” said Rodney Dorsey, chair of the Jacobs Department of Bands. “The recipient is a person whose ‘unique contributions in support of bands have shaped the public view of the band’s value in North American musical culture.’
“I can think of few people that have done more than Dan Perantoni to shape the value of bands in our country. The countless students he’s placed in our service bands and the influence on music education through the students who study with him cannot be underestimated. He is a master musician and teacher.”
Perantoni’s former students hold prestigious positions in major performing ensembles and music schools around the world. Their success attests to his abilities as a teacher, mentor and friend.
He has been a featured artist at Carnegie Hall, Monterey Jazz Festival, Spoleto Festival USA, Adelaide Festival in Australia, Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada and Montreux Brass Congress in Switzerland as well as a soloist throughout Europe and Japan.
Perantoni is a founding member of the Summit Brass, Symphonia, St. Louis Brass Quintet and Matteson-Phillips Tubajazz Consort and has released many solo, chamber music and jazz CDs. He has designed numerous tubas and mouthpieces along with Robert Tucci for the B&S division of Buffet Crampon and is a Buffet Crampon B&S Artist.
“As a member of the Goldman Memorial Citation committee of the American Bandmasters Association, I had the honor of nominating Provost Professor Dan Perantoni for this distinguished award,” said Stephen Pratt, professor of music emeritus and former chair of the Jacobs Department of Bands. “Dan Perantoni is certainly greatly deserving of the award, and his nomination was approved enthusiastically by the committee and executive board. I was pleased to make the announcement to the membership at the most recent ABA convention, in March.”
The first Goldman Citation was presented to Harry Guggenheim in 1963. Recently, it has been awarded to composer John Williams and former principal trumpet of the New York Philharmonic Philip Smith. Other Indiana University music faculty members who have received the award in the past include Eugene Rousseau, Harvey Phillips and Philip Farkas.
