Jacobs professor David Effron will conduct the Summer Philharmonic Orchestra in a diverse program including Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" Saturday, June 28.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – As part of Indiana University's fourth annual Summer Festival of the Arts, the Jacobs School of Music will present Summer Music, a series of more than 40 free and ticketed events from June 7 through July 25. The series will include an array of world-class concerts featuring orchestra, jazz, chamber music, piano, choral, band, percussion, opera and other special events.
Highlights this year include the Summer Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by David Effron, the Pacifica and Rubens quartets, pianists John O'Conor and Jonathan Biss, and choral concerts featuring the Mozart Requiem, among others.

A series of piano recitals beginning June 7 will include the concerto competition winner from the Edward Auer Piano Workshop in concert with the Summer Student Orchestra conducted by Arthur Fagen June 12. Also included in the series are Jacobs alumnus Jonathan Biss in a scholarship benefit concert for the Jacobs Piano Academy June 30 and Irish pianist John O'Conor July 1, among others.
Pacifica Quartet
The Rubens Quartet kicks off the ticketed part of Summer Music June 25, with additional appearances June 29 and July 3.
Amidst other chamber music highlights, the Weiss-Kaplan-Newman Trio returns July 10 and the Festival Chamber Players present a 30th-anniversary concert for the Summer String Academy July 13. The Pacifica Quartet, Jacobs quartet-in-residence, will be in concert July 14, while the Wasmuth Quartet performs July 15.
Audiences will have a rare opportunity to hear Tchaikovsky's dramatic "1812 Overture" in the Musical Arts Center at 8 p.m. June 28. Also included on the diverse program are Bernstein's Overture to "Candide," Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, Anderson's "Bugler's Holiday," Proto's "Casey at the Bat," mezzo-soprano Marietta Simpson and tap-dancers Morgan Stillman and Cassie Dishman.
The Summer Chorus and Orchestra will present a special concert of Mozart's sacred works under the direction of Betsy Burleigh July 12 and 13. These repeat performances seek to create a broader experience by juxtaposing readings—Biblical, poetic and excerpts from Mozart’s letters—with chant and some of the composer's most beloved sacred works. At the center will be the torso of his Requiem, the portions clearly sketched by Mozart himself.

The Summer Saxophone Academy faculty will introduce the jazz component of the series June 15 followed by the Steve Zegree Vocal Jazz Camp final concert June 27, Sara Caswell and Friends July 2 and the Summer Jazz Ensemble July 17.
Additional performances to look forward to include the Percussion Academy faculty July 20, "The World of Percussion" directed by Michael Spiro July 23 and the Percussion Academy Grand Finale July 25.
The Summer Opera Workshop will be directed by Patricia Stiles July 17.
The popular Summer Band concerts, featuring the conducting talents of Stephen W. Pratt and David C. Woodley from the Jacobs Department of Bands, will again be held on the lawn of the Musical Arts Center. The concerts featuring marches, popular favorites, solos and light classics are scheduled for 7 p.m. July 9 and 16. Guest soloists this year include Susan Rider, trumpet player in the United States Marine Band "The President's Own" July 16.
