George and Elizabeth Krueger Memorial Scholarship Fund
George and Elizabeth Krueger dedicated their lives to performing and teaching choral music. George Krueger was chairman of the choral department at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music from 1948 until his retirement in 1972. He was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus of choral music in 1974. During this period, the department expanded from three choruses to a well-rounded program of 12. He is credited with playing an important role in the Jacobs School of Music's advancement to its present position of world eminence. In 1950, Professor Krueger ("Papa K.") founded the Singing Hoosiers. During his 13 years as director, the Singing Hoosiers toured the country and became the first collegiate chorus to tour for the USO. In addition to his career as a conductor, Professor Krueger was also an active performer. He and his wife, Elizabeth ("Mama K."), sang with the Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of Leopold Stokowski. Mrs. Krueger had an outstanding vocal career in her own right. She recorded the original soundtrack of Fantasia for Walt Disney Productions, and appeared in recitals throughout the United States, Europe, and the Far East.
The George and Elizabeth Krueger Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to students interested in pursuing a career in choral conducting.
