Leonard Hokanson Chamber Music Scholarship
Leonard Hokanson was Professor of Piano at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music from 1986 until his death in March of 2001. An internationally recognized soloist and chamber musician, he believed in the importance of being not only a soloist, but also a collaborative pianist, and carried this philosophy through into his teaching.
A prize winner at the International Busoni Competition in Bolzano, Italy, he performed with major orchestras and at international festivals throughout the world. He was a founding member of the Odeon Trio, resident pianist for Bay Chamber Concerts in Rockport, Main, and a guest artist with many renowned chamber music ensembles and instrumentalists. He collaborated with many singers, including Martina arroyo, Grace Bumbry and Hermann Prey, with whom he performed for over 25 years. A prolific recording artist, his recording included solo and chamber music works, as well as Lieder. One of the last pupils of Arthur Schnabel, he also studied with Karl-Ulrich Schnabel, Claude Frank and Julian DeGray. He was a guest professor at the Tokyo College of Music and from 1976-1986, Professor of Piano at the Hochschule fur Musik in Frankfurt, Germany, before coming to Indiana University.
This scholarship will be awarded to the graduate student majoring in piano with a special interest in chamber music, which includes both instrumental chamber music and art song.
