Ernest Hoffzimmer Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund was established in 1993 by former students of Professor Ernest Hoffzimmer to honor the memory of their dedicated teacher. Born in Germany, Professor Hoffzimmer acquired his rich musical background through study with Victor Staub, the well-known French interpreter of Chopin; and with William Dayas of Cologne, one of Liszt's last pupils. Before coming to Indiana University, "Hoffy" (as he was known to his colleagues and students) taught at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin and at the Dusseldorf Conservatory. While teaching in Europe, he also earned an enviable reputation as a concert pianist, presenting the premier performance of works by Swedish composer Ruben Liljefors and Finnish composer Selim Palmgren. Professor Hoffzimmer came to Indiana University in 1927 and quickly established himself as one of the Midwest's outstanding master teachers of keyboard technique. After his retirement, he moved to California where he became head of the piano department at Southern California School of Music in Los Angeles.
The Ernest Hoffzimmer Scholarship is awarded annually to piano students at IU Jacobs School of Music.
