Rose and Irving Fell Violin Scholarship
Rose and Irving Fell were born in Chicago, Illinois and attended school there until Irving and his parents moved to Bloomington, Indiana in 1917 when he was 8 years old. The two children often wrote and visited one another and eventually fell in love. Rose and Irving studied violin and enjoyed playing for family and friends. In September of 1931, they married and made their home in Bloomington. Irving became a businessman who owned the Fell Iron and Medal Company. He played his violin for service clubs and social events. Rose, who was a professional violinist, became acquainted with Dean Merrill of Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He quickly drafted her to play in the University Orchestras. Both Rose and Irving shared their love of music with their three children. Roberta, the eldest, studied piano; Arthur studied piano with Professor Hofzimmer. Their third child, Eleanor, became a professional harpist. The fells always encouraged their family, and others, to support music in the home and in the community.
This violin scholarship was presented to Rose Fell by her three children in honor of her 91st birthday on February 22, 2002, and also in memory of their father, Irving, who passed away in 1979 at the age of 69.
Rose and Irving Fell's devotion to the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music is represented by this violin scholarship, which is presented annually.
