Joan and Marvin Carmack Scholarship
Marvin Carmack was born in 1913 in Vermillion County, Indiana. He attended the University of Illinois and received a degree in Chemistry with honors in 1937. He completed his Masters and Ph.D. degree at the University of Michigan, then returned to Illinois for post-doctoral research.
After teaching at the University of Pennsylvania, and working with the National Defense Research Committee on high explosives and anti-malarial agents during World War II, he became a Professor of Chemistry at Indiana University in 1953. Impressed by IU's administration and then-Chemistry Department chairman, Harry G. Day, Carmack decided to move back to his home state of Indiana. He remained at IU until his retirement in 1983. Throughout his career, he has also been awarded the Guggenheim and Fulbright Fellowships.
Marvin Carmack wished to make a gift in memory of his wife and himself for the benefit of music students at the Jacobs School. The Jacobs School of Music is grateful for the Carmack's and their support through the Joan and Marvin Carmack Scholarship.
