The John and June Canfield Bloomington Pops Scholarship Fund
(est. 1988) John Canfield was born May 15, 1924 in Cleveland, Ohio. He completed his undergraduate study in Music Education at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He earned his Masters degree from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati and his Doctorate in Music from Florida State University.
Dr. Canfield is an orchestral stringed instrument specialist, having been music educator, adjudicator, conductor, developer, composer, and arranger in the music field. Most of his professional career took place in Florida, both at the college and secondary levels. He founded the string program in the Ft. Lauderdale schools and was influential as president of the Florida Orchestra Association in raising the level of string performance at both public schools and universities in Florida.
He founded and conducted the Fr. Lauderdale Symphony, now called the Florida Philharmonic, the Ft. Lauderdale Youth Symphony, and in Indiana, the Bloomington Pops.
June DeBoor Canfield was born August 17, 1924 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She studied violin and received her BA in Economics from Ohio Wesleyan University and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She has served as an administrative assistant to her husband in all his endeavors, especially the Bloomington Pops. Her support behind the scenes contributed to the success of these programs.
The Bloomington Pops established the John and June Canfield Scholarship Fund in recognition of the Canfields' contributions to the field of music, and more particularly, to the Bloomington Pops. This scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student in the Jacobs School.
