Helen and Leland Butler Friends of Music Scholarship
Helen and Leland Butler have shown unwavering commitment and support for those pursuing a life in the performing arts and excellence in music performance.
Helen Butler was born in Ft. Stockton, Texas and lived in eastern New Mexico and west Texas, following around her father, who was a Methodist Minister. Her mother was the consummate minister's wife, who sang in the church choir, taught piano lessons, and led Bible classes. Music began early for Helen as she sang in the children's choirs and started piano lessons with her mother.
Helen is a graduate of Cottey College in Nevada, MO, where she studied organ; Southern Methodist University where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Sacred Music with concentration in Organ; and IU where she completed her Master's of Music Education with concentration in Voice.
While raising two children, she taught private piano and directed Children's Choirs at First United Methodist Church. She entered the MCCSC teaching force as Music Teacher in several schools. After 23 years of teaching, she retired in 2001.
Helen and her husband, Leland, have been members of the First United Methodist Church Choir for over 40 years. Helen has also demonstrated leadership in fundraising efforts through the Society of the Friends of Music.
The Jacobs School of Music is grateful for the Butler's support and dedication to music, music education, and the Jacobs School. The Helen and Leland Butler Friends of Music Scholarship is presented to undergraduate students enrolled at the Jacobs School.
