Earl O. Bates Memorial Scholarship
(est. 2003) Earl O. Bates was a Professor of Clarinet at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music from 1963 until 1989. He also served as Woodwind Department Chair for many years. Professor Bates was principal clarinetist with the Houston, Kansas City and St. Louis Symphony Orchestras and the Aspen Music Festival. He was also a member of the American Woodwind Quintet, the Aspen Woodwind Quintet and the St. Louis Symphony Woodwind Quintet and was in demand as a soloist and clinician throughout the United States. Professor Bates held degrees from the University of Michigan and Oklahoma State University and was a scholarship student at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, Massachusetts.
The Earl O. Bates Scholarship is awarded annually to support clarinet majors within the IU Jacobs School of Music.
