Amy Ming Wai Tai is assistant professor of music in music theory at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
Her research studies the relationship between ballet and modern dance and western art music. Tai’s dissertation argues that neoclassical ballets choreographed to the music of J. S. Bach offer new, embodied perspectives to understand the composer’s music. Her current project examines how dance can illuminate embodied metaphors in western art music more generally.
Tai’s other research interests include phenomenology, narrativity in non-programmatic dance and music, and Labanotation, one of the most widely used dance notation systems in the world.
Tai has presented her work in national and international conferences, including the Society for Music Theory, Music Theory Midwest, and Royal Music Association (U.K.). She has given invited talks internationally, such as at the University of Hong Kong and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. She has also received awards such as the Royal Music Association Small Research Grant and the Society for Music Theory Minority Travel Grant.
