Gabriel Lubell is visiting lecturer in music in music in general studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
He is also a composer, music theorist, and astronomer. His teaching has been recognized with awards from three different programs across IU, and his work on music theory course design received an honorable mention from the Society for Music Theory in 2022.
As a theorist, Lubell has conducted original research on how albums operate as complete artworks, focusing especially on our subjective roles as listeners. He has presented papers about albums by the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Sleater-Kinney in print and at international conferences.
His own music frequently draws on his background as a scientist, seeking to both inform and arouse curiosity about natural wonders, great and small. He has taught courses about how music and science work together, and, with Meredith Michael, hosts the podcast Cosmophonia: an exploration of all things connecting music and space.
Lubell earned a doctorate in music composition from the Jacobs School of Music, master’s degrees in composition and astronomy from IU, and an undergraduate degree from Vassar College.
In addition to the Jacobs School of Music, he has held teaching positions at Knox, Macalester, and Kenyon colleges.
