Biography
David Cartledge, NCTM, is professor of music in piano and director of graduate studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
He has performed across the United States and internationally. A recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Trust Award for Young Australians and the Sir John Crawford Scholarship of the Australian American Association Canberra, Cartledge has also been awarded grants from the Ian Potter and George Alexander foundations.
In addition to directing the graduate programs at the Jacobs School, Cartledge also teaches courses in piano literature for graduate students majoring in piano. For a quarter-century, he directed the school’s Secondary Piano Program, a program for non-piano majors that under his leadership grew to more than 900 students per semester.
At conferences, Cartledge has demonstrated methods for training tomorrow’s music professionals to speak effectively about music, using digital musical analysis effectively in the classroom, and using video as an effective means of asynchronous instruction. His presentations include these and other topics at both national and chapter College Music Society conferences, the national conference of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction, the National Group Piano and Piano Pedagogy Forum, the World Piano Pedagogy Conference, and the Indiana Music Teachers Association state conference. He has served on the national program committees of the MTNA National Conference and the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy, and he is cochair of the NCKP Teacher Education in Higher Education Committee.
A native of Australia, Cartledge is a graduate of the Australian National University, Canberra. His graduate studies were at Indiana University, where he completed his master’s and doctoral work. His teachers were Gyorgy Sebok, Béla Síki, Christopher Elton, John Luxton, and Angela Griffiths. He has a comprehensive background as a pedagogue, having been involved in the instruction of students at all levels over many years.
For several years, Cartledge was codirector of the Indiana University Piano Academy, an annual multiweek opportunity for middle-to-high-school pianists from around the world to gather in Bloomington. He is frequently invited to give master classes, and he has judged competitions at both state and national levels. He resides in Bloomington, Indiana, with his wife, son, and daughter.
