Our approach to percussion takes you around the world.
You'll be trained in virtually every aspect of percussion performance—orchestral percussion, timpani, solo marimba, chamber percussion, drum set, jazz vibes, and world percussion. Music education is at the core of everything our department does, so you will also be prepared to teach.
As a student, you'll have access to a vast and world-class inventory of impeccably maintained percussion instruments and equipment for personal practice and all music school-related rehearsals and performances. You’ll also study in acoustically superior teaching and practice facilities to rival any music school or conservatory in the world.
Our faculty boasts music scholars, award-winning composers, National Endowment for the Arts recipients, Pulitzer Prize winners, and Jazz Masters.

Our percussion students enjoy a variety of performance opportunities, including symphony, opera, and ballet orchestras; concert and marching bands; percussion, steel pan, and hand drumming ensembles; jazz big bands; and combos.
Every other summer, we offer a six-day intensive Summer Percussion Academy and Workshop for pre-college students grades 7-12, with a concurrent session for adults over 18.
I was blown away by the sheer talent around me and, in some ways, daunted by it. It was a motivator as well. I believe that the rigor of training at Jacobs enables a person to be great in this world.
