Admissions Process

Admission to the B.S. in Music Business does not require an audition or an interview, however, we strongly encourage interested students to visit campus and attend one of the Jacobs School of Music daily sessions and tours.

Admission to the B.S. in Music Business is offered based on individual review of applications, considering the students academic background, answers to the Applicant Questionnaire, three letters of recommendation, Applicant Essay, and additional information provided about the background and future career objectives. In the JSOM Supplemental Application, applicants are asked to complete the following steps:

  • While not a requirement, have you had any music education, or training or past involvement with any music-related projects (e.g., choir, band, instrument lessons, band management, music-related articles, etc...)? If yes, please provide details.
  • What are your career goals and how would admission into this program help you attain those goals?
  • What are your primary interests in terms of non-academic or social activities?
  • What are your musical preferences in terms of artists, musical genre or media?
  • What specifically appeals to you about Indiana University, the Jacobs School of Music or this program?
  • What aspect of the music business appeals to you most and how would you propose to improve or add value to that business after graduation?

This optional step can include any music or entertainment-related creative, artistic, philanthropic or relevant work product. Some examples include music you have written, recorded and / or produced for yourself or for others; relevant published papers or articles; web design, band or artist promotional materials you've created; UGC or other film or video productions; electronics projects, etc. Submissions may be URLs, photographs, and print materials. Please include a complete description of any portfolio materials.

You must include three letters of recommendation from teachers or musical instructors. Make sure to follow up with your recommenders to submit their letters via the emailed links. All three letters must be received via your JSOM Supplemental application to complete your portfolio.

Submit an essay of 3-5 pages on one of the following topics under the Media Upload section of your JSOM Supplemental application:

  • Discuss the current state of the music industry (from your perspective) and
what you believe is (or will be) the biggest issue facing the industry.
  • Choose a specific film or television show and discuss the importance of
specific music / music placement in that production and how it enhances
    the storyline.
  • Discuss your preferred platform for discovering new music (e.g., audio streaming) and discuss the pros and cons of this platform compared to at
    least two "alternatives

You must upload and submit a copy of your transcript to your JSOM Supplemental application to complete your prescreening portfolio. We cannot retrieve your transcript from the Indiana University Office of Admissions.
