Melissa Dickson is the Jacobs-Chaleff Dickson Richards (J-CDR) Assistant Dean for External Affairs at the Jacobs School of Music. With a career spanning over a decade at the forefront of fundraising and communications, Dickson plays a pivotal role in shaping the Jacobs School's strategic initiatives.
As an accomplished advancement strategist, Dickson's approach is deeply rooted in her philosophy of relationship-focused philanthropy: giving space for the donor’s vision and mission to shape and guide their connection and philanthropy. She collaborates closely with all major stakeholders within the Jacobs School community to cultivate meaningful connections and achieve ambitious fundraising goals. Dickson’s expertise extends beyond the Bloomington campus, as she works with key partners both nationally and internationally to elevate the Jacobs School's philanthropy and visibility on a global scale.
Melissa's journey at the Jacobs School began in 2005 when she joined the development office as an assistant director. She quickly proved her capabilities and dedication, subsequently assuming roles of increasing responsibility. From serving as acting director from 2006 to 2008 to her appointments as associate director of development in 2008, senior director in 2010, and director in 2012, Melissa's trajectory exemplifies her commitment to advancing the mission of the Jacobs School. Throughout her tenure, Melissa's dedication and vision have been instrumental in expanding crucial relationships and fostering a culture of philanthropy within the Jacobs School community.
Central to Melissa's leadership is her unwavering commitment to her team. She celebrates the dedication, thoughtfulness, and attentive listening skills of her development office staff, recognizing their integral role in achieving fundraising milestones. Together, Melissa and her team achieved remarkable success during the Indiana University For All: Bicentennial Campaign, raising an impressive $113 million by its conclusion in September 2020.
A proud alumna of the Jacobs School of Music, Melissa graduated in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in voice performance, with an outside field in English literature. Under the mentorship of Teresa Kubiak and the late Paul Kiesgen, she honed her musical talents and cultivated a deep appreciation for the arts. Melissa's contributions to her alma mater have not gone unnoticed, as she has been honored with the Singing Hoosiers Distinguished Young Alumni Award and recognized for her philanthropic service in the arts and higher education.
