Georgina Joshi Composition Commission Award
A $1000 commission to be awarded to a Jacobs School of Music student majoring in composition for a work for solo voice and instrumental ensemble to be premiered by the IU New Music Ensemble.
The Georgina Joshi Composition Commission Award, made possible by a gift from the Georgina Joshi Foundation, provides an annual award to an undergraduate or graduate student composer within the IU Jacobs School of Music Composition Department, for a composition for solo voice and instrumental ensemble. The Georgina Joshi Composition Commission Award is presented as part of the composition department’s Dean’s Prize competition to the student composer of the work involving voice that is ranked highest as judged by the composition department faculty.
Students wishing to be considered for the award will enter a work for voice and instruments in Category B of the composition department's Dean's Prize competition (or append an example of your vocal writing to your submission). The composition department faculty will choose 2 works from Category B as commission prize winners; one of these commissions will be the Georgina Joshi Commission for a work for solo voice and instruments, awarded to the composer of the work for voice and instruments ranked highest as judged by the composition department faculty.
During the summer following the award, the director of the New Music Ensemble will meet with the commissioned composer to determine the length and instrumentation of the new work.
DEADLINE:Entries should be submitted with the Dean's Prize procedures no later than 12:00 noon, on the Monday following Spring Break.
ELIGIBILITY:Enrollment as a composition major during fall and/or the following spring semester for each spring deadline. Additionally, the winning student must be returning to IU the following year or graduating from the DM program.
A native of Indiana, Georgina Joshi received her bachelor’s degree in music (with honors) from the Royal College of Music, London, where she studied with Eiddwen Harrhy. While at IU, Joshi appeared as a soloist in Haydn’s Creation, Handel’s Solomon, Bach’s B-Minor Mass, the Mozart Requiem and the Brahms Deutsches Requiem. She also appeared in IU Opera Theater productions as Clorinda in La Cenerentola and Despina in Così fan tutte. An enthusiastic performer, she collaborated with other musicians, such as the Catacoustic Consort and The Bath Street Studio and was a member of the Jacobs School’s ProArte Choir and the Carmel Bach Festival Chorale. Outside the U.S., she appeared as a soloist in England, Wales, Romania, and Greece.
