Vocal Jazz Ensemble

IU Vocal Jazz Ensemble

The IU  Vocal Jazz Ensemble I is the premiere vocal jazz group in the Jacobs School of Music.

Vocal Jazz Ensemble I, Steve Zegree, Director
IUnison (Vocal Jazz Ensemble II), Ly Wilder Director

The vocal jazz ensembles in the Jacobs School of Music are a vital and important aspect of the jazz voice major at Indiana University.

Vocal Jazz Ensemble I won the 2014 Down Beat Award in the Graduate College Vocal Group category.

Both IU vocal jazz ensembles traveled to New York City in 2014 and gave featured performances at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Programming includes arrangements and compositions culled from the most challenging and sophisticated repertoire in the vocal jazz idiom, ranging from bop to swing to big band to R&B, as well as current  and contemporary charts.

An emphasis on solo singing  and improvisation is a vital part of the ensemble experience, and student writing and arranging is encouraged.

The ensemble is open to any Indiana University student by audition (REGARDLESS OF MAJOR!) and participation is required for Jazz Voice majors.
