The IU Vocal Jazz Ensemble I is the premiere vocal jazz group in the Jacobs School of Music.

Vocal Jazz Ensemble I (VJEI), and IUnison (VJEII) are both directed by Duane Davis

The vocal jazz ensembles in the Jacobs School of Music are a vital and important aspect of the jazz voice major at Indiana University.

Vocal Jazz Ensemble I won the 2014 & 2015 Down Beat Award in the Graduate College Vocal Group category.

The IU vocal jazz ensembles have traveled to New York City and given featured performances at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The ensemble has shared the stage with Janis Siegel (Manhattan Transfer), Bobby McFerrin, Darmon Meader (New York Voices) and many others.

The repertoire includes arrangements and compositions culled from the most challenging and sophisticated repertoire in the vocal jazz idiom, ranging from bop to swing to big band to R&B, as well as current and contemporary charts.

An emphasis on solo singing and improvisation is a vital part of the ensemble experience, and student writing and arranging is encouraged. Students are guided by a renowned faculty including Duane Davis, Ly Wilder and Darmon Meader.

The ensemble is open to any Indiana University student by audition (REGARDLESS OF MAJOR!) and participation is required for Jazz Voice majors.
