Ballet

Elective Program

The IU Ballet Department offers ballet classes for levels Beginner through Advanced to students across the IU campus. Any IU student is welcome to learn the basics of ballet in a Beginner class or to continue previous extracurricular study. Ballet is also recommended as a vital component of stagecraft for any student interested in pursuing a career in the performing arts.

Instructors for Elective ballet classes are Ballet department faculty, assisted by Ballet Majors enrolled in the ballet pedagogy course.

Classes take place in the Ballet Department studios on the third floor of the Musical Arts Center, 101 N. Jordan Ave, from 8am to 11am and 5:45pm to 8:30pm. To see a list of classes offered, click here.

Current semester schedules can be obtained through the Schedule of Classes and are listed under the Jacobs School of Music. For undergraduates, the course is MUS-J100. For graduate students, it is MUS-J700. The ballet department does not offer a minor in ballet

There is no audition for elective ballet classes. A placement class is offered in the previous semester as a sample class, but is not required for registration. Students interested in registering may contact the elective ballet coordinator to ask for placement recommendations. As necessary, students will be guided by teachers to switch to an appropriate level class for their capability after the first class of the term.

Four levels of study are offered: Beginner, Advanced Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Students are not required to start at beginner if they have a background of previous study.

All students wishing to participate in any elective ballet class must officially register, as the Jacobs School of Music does not allow auditing of MUS-J100 or MUS-J700.

For more information, please contact the elective ballet coordinator Sophia Fatouros at sfatouro@indiana.edu.
