FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After more than three decades, the editorship of the Philosophy of Music Education Review, the premier refereed journal internationally devoted to the publication of philosophical scholarship in music education, is changing hands.
First published by the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 1993, the journal has been a joint publication of the Jacobs School and Indiana University Press since 2003.
Founding editor Estelle Jorgensen, Jacobs professor emerita of music in music education, continued to edit the publication even in retirement, from 2013 to the present. She and associate editor Iris Yob, professor emerita at Walden University, will support the successive editors as they transition into their new roles, effective June 1.
The new team comprises editor Alexandra Kertz-Welzel, dean and professor of music education at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet in Munich, Germany, and guest professor at the University of Inland Norway in Hamar, Norway; associate editor Paul Louth, professor of music education at Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio; and assistant editor Leonard Tan, associate professor of music at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
“For over three decades, the Philosophy of Music Education Review has stood as the leading international journal dedicated to philosophical scholarship in music education,” said Peter Miksza, chair of the Jacobs Department of Music Education. “Under the visionary leadership of its founding editor, Professor Emerita Estelle Jorgensen, the journal has shaped critical discourse, fostered global dialogue and advanced the field in profound ways. We are immensely grateful for her dedication and scholarly contributions.
“As we prepare for this transition, we take great pride in the journal’s continued association with the music education department within the Jacobs School of Music. The appointment of the new editorial team, led by esteemed scholars, ensures that PMER will remain at the forefront of philosophical inquiry in music education. Their leadership will build upon the journal’s legacy, further strengthening its international reach and impact.”
Although the editorship of the Philosophy of Music Education Review will change, the Jacobs School of Music and IU Press will continue to co-publish the journal and maintain the school's reputation as a center for philosophy of music education.
“We look forward to seeing how the Philosophy of Music Education Review continues to inspire and challenge scholars worldwide, and we reaffirm our commitment to supporting this vital forum for philosophical exploration in music education,” said Miksza.
