Carmen Maret is adjunct associate professor of music in flute at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
She is a distinguished performer and composer whose career in classical music showcases her adventurous approach to playing and writing for the flute. Known for her streamlined flute tone and profound understanding of rhythmic interplay, she blends elements of tango, jazz, world music, and improvisation into her unique style. Her performances have been praised for their artistry across various genres, with Flutist Quarterly noting, “As a flutist, Maret displays nuanced virtuosity across all styles.”
As a founding member of the Folias Duo with her husband, guitarist Andrew Bergeron, Maret has played a pivotal role in establishing this unique performer-composer ensemble based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Since 2003, the duo has captivated audiences with its fusion of classical and contemporary influences, performing across the United States, South America, and Europe. In addition to performing, she co-manages the ensemble, organizing and promoting a 20-concert tour each summer in the western United States.
Maret’s discography includes eight albums of original compositions and innovative arrangements. These works, including five albums on the Blue Griffin Recording label from 2004 to 2014, and more recent releases on the Folias Music Label, such as Dreaming to Live (2017), Delicate Omens (2019), and Heartdance (2023), highlight her commitment to expanding the flute and guitar repertoire and exploring new musical expressions.
Beyond her performance and recording career, Maret is a dedicated educator. She teaches at the Folias Music School and has held faculty positions at Aquinas College and Grand Rapids Community College, where she has taught courses in flute, flute ensemble, music history, music business, and music technology.
At the Jacobs School of Music, Maret shares her extensive DIY experience and passion for music with her students, fostering a nurturing and inspiring learning environment. She holds a bachelor’s degree in flute performance from the University of Missouri–Kansas City Conservatory of Music and two master’s degrees from Michigan State University: one in flute performance and one in ethnomusicology.
Maret is committed to mentoring the next generation of musicians, emphasizing both technical skill and revolutionary artistry in her teaching philosophy.
