Biography

Carl Lenthe is professor of music in trombone at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

He served as principal trombonist with the Bavarian State Opera in Munich (1977-94) and the Bamberg Symphony (1994-98). He has performed with the Berlin Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, and many others. His expertise on the Wagnerian bass trumpet kept him in demand in European opera houses and also led to collaborations with the Houston Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and the Metropolitan Opera.

As trombone soloist, Lenthe received first prize with distinction at the international music competition Prague Spring. He has appeared as a soloist with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Prague Symphony, and Bamberg Symphony.

Lenthe’s chamber music activities include tours and recordings with Summit Brass as well as performing a variety of brass chamber and solo literature. His solo CD is The Audition Window (Summit Records DCD 354), and he can also be heard on the recordings accompanying the Voxman/Rubank Concert and Contest Collection for both trombone and euphonium. His most recent multimedia project, Birth of a Concerto, can be viewed at IU Media Collections Online.

Lenthe works closely with the B&S Music Instrument Company of Germany and was instrumental in designing its Meistersinger series of trombones.
