Steven Berlanga comes to the Jacobs School of Music from Salinas, California and is currently in his second year pursuing a DM in Choral Conducting. He completed his MM degree at College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati, where he served as director of the UC Cabaret Singers and assistant conductor of the UC Men’s Chorus. Mr. Berlanga holds a BM degree in Vocal Performance from California State University – Long Beach, where he was assistant conductor for the University and Chamber Choirs, director of the CSULB Women’s Chorus, and chorus master of the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music Opera Institute. He received his AA degree in Music from Cabrillo College and directed Dolce of the Cabrillo Youth Chorus.

Mr. Berlanga is also active as a Bass-baritone, having sung the roles of Caiaphas in Jesus Christ Superstar, Villains in Tales of Hoffmann, Dick Deadeye in H.M.S Pinafore, and this fall he will perform the role of Colline in the IU Opera production of La Boheme. In 2011 he performed the baritone solos in Hindemith’s When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d with the Cabrillo Summer Chorus, and he returned in 2012 to perform the baritone solos in Vaughan Williams’s Dona Nobis Pacem with the Santa Cruz Symphony and Cabrillo Symphonic Chorus. As a professional chorister, he has sung with the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Cincinnati. 

Mr. Berlanga is currently the director of music at Tabernacle Christian Church in Franklin, IN, and is choral contractor for the Columbus, Indiana Symphony Chorus. Previously, he has been director of music at Monfort Heights United Methodist Church in Green, OH, and has sung at the First Congregational Church of Long Beach, CA and the First Congregational Church of Santa Cruz, CA.
