Sessions: Fall, Spring and Summer The pre-college ballet program is committed to creating a positive and stimulating environment for children learning to dance. In order to enhance each child's love and appreciation for the art of dance, classes are designed to challenge as well as encourage each student to achieve his or her personal best. Ages: 3-18
Sessions: Fall and Spring semesters only The mission of the IU Children's Choir is to teach young people to value and experience singing through musical activities that inspire musical ability, self-expression, and personal growth. The goal is a lifelong appreciation of fine music. Auditions are held in the first week of the fall and spring semesters. Ages: 5-18
Guitar (non-residential program)Sessions: Fall, Spring and Summer Students are paired with classically trained professional musicians to learn guitar in both a one-on-one and group setting. The program is designed to establish a strong musical and technical foundation for playing guitar, and students get to jump in and play immediately after the first lesson. Beginning students will acquire basic technique using familiar tunes that correspond with their age. IU staff is available to accompany parents to music shops and help choose the right instrument for their children.Ages: 5-18
Harp (non-residential program)Sessions: Fall and Spring semesters onlyThe Harp program is open to students with no previous musical training, though 1-2 years of piano and a sense of humor are highly recommended. An interview is necessary prior to acceptance in the program. Harp students receive one private lesson each week, participate in weekly master classes, and perform in a class recital at the end of each semester. The program is directed by Associate Professor of Music Elzbieta Szmyt, who creates an inspiring atmosphere of friendship and support. Students must rent or own their own instrument, as the school can provide only limited access to school harps. Harp rentals are available at Vanderbilt Music Company in Bloomington, 312 S. Swain Ave, phone number 333-5255. Vanderbilt offers a wide range of pedal and non-pedal harps, as well as all necessary music and accessories. Ages: 6-18
Musical Beginnings (non-residential program)Sessions: Fall and Spring semesters onlyMusical Beginnings is an early childhood
music and movement program that invites children from birth through preschool to
experience the world around them through singing, movement, listening, playing,
and creating music. The classes offer developmentally appropriate activities
that help awaken and develop a child's innate joy and musical ability. Studies
have shown that early childhood--a time of rapid growth and brain development--is
the optimal time to start this musical journey. In addition to being a time for
joyful music-making, these classes lay a solid foundation for future musical
experiences such as choir, piano, and other instrument lessons. Web: http://www.music.indiana.edu/special_programs/mb
