GOVERNOR’S ARTS AWARDS CELEBRATE MENAHEM PRESSLER AND TWO JACOBS SCHOOL ALUMNI

MACIndiana University and the Jacobs School of Music will once again be in the limelight when the Indiana Arts Commission presents the 2007 Governor’s Arts Awards on Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Musical Arts Center in Bloomington. The event marks the first time in the 35-year history of the awards that ceremonies will be conducted outside the state capital.

LEONARD SLATKIN WILL DEBUT WHEN HE DIRECTS THE IU PHILHARMONIC ON SEPT. 23

Slatkin and McNairInternationally renowned conductor Leonard Slatkin will begin his tenure as a Jacobs School of Music faculty member by conducting the IU Philharmonic on Sept. 23. The maestro will lead the orchestra in Barber's Symphony No. 1 in One Movement, Op. 9 and Elgar's Enigma Variations, Op. 36. Elevating the occasion further, fellow Jacobs faculty member Sylvia McNair, Grammy Award-winning soprano, will join Slatkin and the orchestra for selections from Canteloube's Chants d'Auvergne. The concert, at 8:00 p.m. in the Musical Arts Center, is free and open to the public.

THE ENDURING LEGACY OF MAX RÖTHLISBERGER

Rothlisberger set for Rigoletto In addition to designing breathtaking new sets for IU Opera Theater in the years since his colleague left, David C. Higgins has been responsible for keeping Max Röthlisberger's sets intact and viable for IU Opera's demanding repertoire. He and his staff have done a remarkable job: Rigoletto's set was first used in 1974 and is being used for the last time for this season's production, which opens tonight at 8pm in the MAC with additional performances September 22, 28, and 29.

The new IU Opera Theater season opens tonight! Verdi’s ever-popular Rigoletto runs at 8pm in the MAC on Sept. 21, 22, 28, and 29, with pre-performance talk Opera Insights at 7pm in the mezzanine. Enjoy the Grieg Celebration on Sept. 23 at 2pm before Leonard Slatkin conducts the IU Philharmonic at 8pm that evening, featuring soprano Sylvia McNair! Don’t miss the season-opener of the Jazz Ensemble, directed by David Baker, on Sept. 24; the faculty piano recital by André de Groote on Sept. 25; or the Concert Orchestra, conducted by Kevin Noe, on Sept. 26. And hear what this year’s Sonneborn Award-winner, W. Claude Baker, has to say in his award lecture on Sept. 27.
