WFIU ARTIST OF THE MONTH: SVEN-DAVID SANDSTRÖM

Sandstrom

The IU Jacobs School of Music-affiliated Artists of the Month, announced in WFIU’s “Directions in Sound” program guide, are also featured in “Fanfare,” with a convenient link so you may listen online. This month, Sven-David Sandström is in the spotligh.

WFIU's Artist of the Month for August is composer and professor at the IU Jacobs School of Music and Royal College of Music in Stockholm Sven-David Sandström.

Sandström studied composition with György Ligeti, Ingvar Lindholm, and Per Norgard, and his works are influenced by jazz, popular, modernist, and minimalist music. With more than 90 compositions in his portfolio, Sandström is perhaps best known for his operatic and choral works.

In 1997, the Oslo Cathedral commissioned the oratorio Moses for their 300th anniversary, and Sandström's opera, Jeppe: The Cruel Comedy, was commissioned for the centennial of the Swedish Opera Company.

Sandström has been honored with the Christ Johnson Prize and Major Award, the Nordic Council Award, and the Buxtehude Award, and his works have been performed by major international ensembles including the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam.

Throughout the month of August, you can hear recordings of Sven-David Sandström's music on WFIU. And on Wednesday, August 8, at 10:08 p.m., WFIU will feature a complete performance of his work for soloists, chorus, organ, and orchestra, The High Mass, which has been compared to Bach's B minor mass and Beethoven's Missa solemnis.

All performances can be heard through wfiu.indiana.edu.
