Early November boasts the return of two elite ensembles to the Jacobs School of Music: the virtuosic Orion String Quartet on November 5 and the distinguished Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra on November 12.
THE ORION QUARTET
Its November appearance will mark Orion’s debut as an ensemble-in-residence at Jacobs during the 2006-2007 academic year. The quartet will perform on November 5 at 4pm in Auer Hall and present master classes on November 6 and 7, 12-3pm, in Ford Hall.
Orion will continue its residency in December with a performance on the fifth at 8pm in Auer Hall and master classes on the fourth and fifth, 12-3pm in Ford Hall.
Spring will find the quartet in concert on February 25 and March 25, both with accompanying master classes.
The Orion String Quartet is one of the most sought-after ensembles in the United States, and its members have worked with some of music's most legendary figures, such as Peter Serkin, Pablo Casals, Yo-Yo Ma, and Isaac Stern. The quartet has also been credited with presenting the definitive interpretation of the Beethoven String Quartets and has performed the complete Beethoven cycle at the Jacobs School.
THE INDIANAPOLIS SYMPHONY
With soloists Jaime Laredo, violin, and Sharon Robinson, cello
Just a week after Orion’s first performance, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO), under the baton of Music Director Mario Venzago, will light up the MAC at 3pm on Sunday, November 12.
Joining the orchestra will be very special guests and internationally renowned Jacobs faculty members Sharon Robinson, cello, and Jaime Laredo, violin. Robinson and Laredo will perform the Brahms Double Concerto in A Minor, Op. 102, a piece they have been performing together for over 30 years.
The ISO performs approximately 200 concerts a year for more than 350,000 people. It is the largest performing arts organization in the state and one of only 18 year-round orchestras in the nation. It makes its home at the magnificent Hilbert Circle Theatre at Symphony Centre in downtown Indianapolis.
This event is free and open to the public, but be sure to get there early as last year’s concert was packed!
