DAVID BAKER RECEIVES SONNEBORN AWARD

David BakerDistinguished Professor David N. Baker, chair of the Jazz Studies Department, received the Tracy M. Sonneborn Award for 2006 on September 7. The annual award recognizes an IU faculty member who has achieved international recognition for work as a performer, composer, scholar, and educator. With an extraordinary career as composer, jazz pedagogue, performer, and national arts leader, Baker continues to inspire students, faculty colleagues, and alumni, as well as musicians and arts leaders around the world. Stanislaw Skrowaczeski Fall semester is in full swing at Jacobs with season openers in abundance. Don’t miss Professor of Composition and pianist Don Freund’s performance of J.S. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1 (complete) tonight, September 8, or the faculty of the Early Music Institute in recital tomorrow evening. One of the world’s most prominent conductors, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, will lead the school’s premier orchestral ensemble, the Philharmonic Orchestra, on September 13, and George Hanson will guest-conduct the Chamber Orchestra on the 20 th. Now is the time to get your tickets, if you do not already have them, for IU Opera Theater as it opens its season on September 22 with W. A. Mozart’s Don Giovanni.
