What Year-Round programs are offered?

We offer a wide variety of programs for children and young adults, including Musical Beginnings for ages 1-4, private and group lessons for beginners through advanced level in Guitar, Harp, Piano, Recorder, and String instruments (violin, viola, and cello). Some programs runs year-round, while other programs operate only during the school year. Every spring semester we offer a Young Winds program for 6th-9th graders that includes two Concert Bands, an Orchestra and two Jazz Bands.

What is special about the Jacobs School of Music summer programs?

Our summer programs provide an opportunity for pre-college students, emerging artists, instructors, undergraduate and graduate students to immerse themselves in their chosen discipline for several days or weeks with some of the finest music educators in the country.

What Pre-college Academies are offered?

Academies include: Ballet Summer Intensive, College Audition Preparation, String Academy, Piano Academy, Percussion Academy, and Summer Music Clinic.

What performance-oriented adult workshops are offered?

Performance-oriented workshops include: Clarinet Performance Workshop, Ballet Summer Intensive for Dancers & Choreographers, Edward Auer Summer Piano Workshop, Summer Percussion Workshop, Natural Horn Workshop, and Fearless Performance for Musicians.

What teaching-oriented adult workshops are offered?

Teaching-oriented workshops include: Summer Kodály Institute, Retreat for Violin and Viola Teachers, Retreat for School String Teachers, and Orchestral Rehearsal Techniques.

Can I get a Scholarship or Financial Aid for a Year-Round pre-college program?

Year-Round pre-college program scholarships are offered for strings, piano, ballet, and choir.  Scholarships may be awarded based on artistic merit or financial need. Financial aid is awarded to families who have a total family income under $35,000 per year. Please visit individual web pages for further information.

Can I get a Scholarship or Financial Aid for a Summer program?

Summer scholarships and financial aid are offered only for String Academy and Piano Academy. For both programs, financial aid is awarded to families who have a total family income under $50,000 per year. String Academy's financial aid is limited to 10% of tuition amount.  Please visit the Summer String Academy web page for more information.

Do I have to audition for the Program?
  • Year-Round: The Choir and Ballet programs hold placement auditions for all but the youngest dancers and singers.

  • Summer Academies: Audition recordings, recommendation letters and repertoire lists are required for Summer Piano Academy and Summer String Academy, while Ballet Summer Intensive requires a photograph, recommendation letter and resume.

  • Adult Workshops: Audition DVDs or CDs are required for the Clarinet Performance Workshop. The Summer Opera Workshop is only open to former, current, or incoming students in the Jacobs School of Music.

Where do students under age 18 stay during a Summer Academy?

Pre-college Academy participants stay in a residence hall within easy walking distance of the Jacobs School of Music and eat all meals there or nearby.  Counselors who live in the dorm supervise all pre-college students while on campus.  Counselors also chaperone all trips off-campus. Pre-college Academy participants may choose to live off-campus at home or with a parent/guardian.

Where do participants over age 18 stay during a Summer Workshop?

Students ages 18 or older have a choice:  they may stay in a graduate residence hall separate from the pre-college participants under 18, or they may find their own housing off-campus.
