Joshua Bowman

A native of Southern California, percussionist Joshua Bowman currently calls the Hampton Roads region of Virginia home where he serves as the Director of percussion and Assistant director of Athletics Bands at Christopher Newport University. 

An active performer and teacher, Joshua has given recitals and clinics throughout the United States during his professional career. He has presented clinics for High School and college music programs, All-State and regional honor bands, Music Educator conferences, Percussive Arts Society, and PAS Days of Percussion. Joshua’s primary performance area is in contemporary solo and chamber music, orchestral music, and electro-acoustic music that explore the use of live and fixed media elements. In the area of research Joshua has a vested interest in percussion pedagogy and education. 

As a performer, he served as principal percussionist and timpanist for the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus Ohio from 2007-2014. During his tenure with ProMusica Joshua was fortunate to collaborate with soloist, conductors, and composers on new and groundbreaking repertoire in the 20th and 21st century. Additionally Joshua has had the honor to perform with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony, and currently is regularly engaged as an extra percussionist and timpanist with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. 

Joshua’s education credentials include a Bachelor in Music from California State University, Fullerton and graduate degrees in percussion from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. His primary teachers have been John Tafoya, Kevin Bobo, Steve Houghton,  Todd Miller, Anthony Cirone, and Gerry Carlyss.
