MUS F420/F520: Performing and Arranging Latin Repertoire
A workshop which offers the opportunity to practice arranging and composing in the major Latin American musical genres. Students will explore the rhythmic, melodic, harmonic, structural and stylistic characteristics of Latin American music, surveying the cultural and historical backgrounds of each genre in order to intelligently execute their own arrangements and compositions. Class meetings will consist of short lectures on style, technique and context for each genre. Students will be assigned (occasionally bi-weekly) arrangement exercises, which will correspond to the genre being explored in class. Genres studied will include Bolero, Vieja Trova, Cuban Son, Milonga, Choro, Joropo, Nueva Trova, Bossa Nova, Samba, Tango and Salsa.
