Choral Audition Information
Faculty Director of Opera Choruses: Walter Huff
Participation in the Opera Choruses requires a major time commitment from all members. Music rehearsals often occur between 2:30-3:40PM or 4-6PM daily. Staging rehearsals occur four weeks prior to dress rehearsals and run 4-6PM daily in MAC 301. Piano Tech rehearsals often occur on the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday before Dress Week. Dress Rehearsals occur the week prior to the opening performances from 7PM-11PM. Because the IU Opera Theater and Ballet Company sets the schedule of rehearsal on a weekly basis, all chorus members are required to clear their schedules between 4-6PM during daily stagings. Only the Stage Director or Stage Manager may excuse absences prior to the start of staging rehearsals. Under no circumstances are
absences allowed during Dress or Piano Tech Rehearsals and only limited absences are tolerated during stagings.
Participating in the IU Opera Chorus is an excellent way to learn operatic repertoire. Recent productions with opera choruses staffed by the IU Choral Department include West Side Story, Romeo et Juliette, La Rondine, Lucia di Lammermoor, Die Zauberfloete, Love for Three Oranges, La Traviata, Susannah, Rigoletto, Most Happy Fella, L'elisir d'amore, Cosi Fan Tutte, La Boheme, A View from the Bridge, Der Rosenkavalier, Candide, and L'Italiana in Algeri.
Opera Choruses for the 2012-2013 season will include Don Giovanni, The Merry Widow, Cendrillon, Xerxes, Falstaff, and Philip Glass' Akhnaten. Should you be interested in joining one of these opera choruses make sure to indicate your preference at the choral auditions in August.
