July 15 - July 20

Welcome from the Course Director!

Welcome to the Jacobs School of Music Organ Academy website! This academy is designed for inquisitive and motivated pre-college and collegiate organists and/or keyboardists who seek a week of engagement with artist faculty, the stimulation of encountering new ideas, opportunities to perform on outstanding instruments, and the camaraderie of others interested in the King of Instruments. Our modest tuition includes daily lessons, classes, practice room privileges, exposure to the university’s vast library holdings and instrumental collections, including harpsichords and two university carillons.

The organ department, whose heritage spans nearly seven decades, has consistently produced graduates of the highest caliber who serve with distinction in churches, academic settings, and the concert field.  At IU, organ students have the opportunity to take courses in applied organ, organ literature, sacred music, organ construction and design, and improvisation.  More information may be found about all of these opportunities by navigating the menu on the left.

Gifted and internationally recognized faculty bring a wealth of experience, talent, and wisdom to the department.  In addition to their work in the department, they are visible in the wider Bloomington community and in the world as recitalists, clinicians, guest lecturers, and recording artists.  Each of them is available to answer questions about the department and about the possibilities for study and enrichment offered through the Jacobs School of Music.

Interested students are encouraged to contact a member of the faculty directly, as well as the Office of Music Admissions and Financial Aid, for information about audition requirements.

News, April 25, 2017

It is with great happiness that the department announces the appointment of Associate Professor Vincent Carr to our faculty.

Professor Carr is an extremely versatile musician; having earned degrees in organ performance and Spanish from Indiana University, he completed graduate studies at the Yale University School of Music/Institute of Sacred Music.  He has served as a full-time church musician, adjunct university faculty member, organ recitalist, free-lance continuo player and accompanist, bass section leader, conductor, and Music Director for operetta in the UK.  He brings to his teaching a multiplicity of talents and interests, all of which enrich his depth of knowledge and range of experiences, so crucial to the faculty member overseeing the nurture and growth of Sacred Music Studies at the Jacobs School of Music.  A superb practitioner of sacred music in two cathedral settings prior to his appointment, his teaching will primarily focus on service playing, with a special emphasis on improvisation, choral training, church music history, sacred choral repertoire and the practical and philosophical dimensions of a sacred music vocation.
